Nokia teams with Philips to enhance the experience of connected devices in the home environment.

With Philips Streamium wireless audio products and Nokia Home Media Solution users can seamlessly listen to their mobile music via their home stereo and control their music from phone, stereo and PC via their Nokia phone.

Las Vegas, NV, USA - Imagine a world where you play your mobile music on your home stereo, where you control your music devices with your mobile, where digital content flies between your home devices and your phone.

This is the world that Nokia and Philips are building. Taking the next steps towards making this vision a reality, Nokia and Philips announce a new collaboration to bring consumers the ultimate user-friendly home experience supported by the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) protocol.

Nokia Home Media Solution and Philips Streamium products are optimized to give consumers a simple, seamless, and interactive out-of-the-box experience. The Philips Streamium wireless audio products will let users stream music from their mobile devices or from another DLNA-enabled device like a PC in order to enjoy the music at home. With their Nokia mobile device, users can control the Philips wireless audio systems and interact with their music that’s stored on their phone, on their PC or on the audio device.

“Working with Philips, we can simplify the ‘connected home’ experience,” says Richard French, director, head of New Businesses, Nokia. “When people are shopping for new devices, we want to eliminate the guesswork in buying compatible devices for their home network and help them enjoy hassle-free connectivity.”

“We know consumers are increasingly listening to music on mobile phones. However, when they come home, they prefer listening to their music via their normal stereos. We therefore consider a seamless experience between Nokia multimedia devices and Philips Streamium home audio a vital element to deliver simplicity to our consumers,” said Wiebo Vaartjes, General Manager, Audio, Video & Multimedia Applications, at Philips Consumer Lifestyle. “We are therefore proud to announce this collaboration with Nokia, comprising the next step in our commitment to truly deliver and promote the interoperability between our products via the open DLNA standard.”

Nokia Home Media Solution:
The Nokia Connected Home is a set of Home Media applications and services allowing Nokia mobile users to enjoy their digital music, photos and videos through TV and stereos wirelessly at home. All you need is a compatible Nokia Nseries multimedia device, a wireless network solution and a compatible PC or a supported UPnP/DLNA media renderer or server, such as a television, home stereo system or a gaming console. The Nokia Home Media solution is now available on millions of Nseries devices, including the Nokia N96 and Nokia N95 8GB.

Philips Streamium
Philips innovative wireless music devices empower music lovers to free their digital music from the confines of a PC or a personal CD collection, and effortlessly stream the music throughout their entire home or work space. Today this range of Streamium products includes the Philips Wireless Music Center (WACS7500) with its satellites, the wireless music station (WAS6050), and the Philips Network Music Players (NP1100, NP2500 and NP2900). All models of the Philips Network Music Players’ range easily integrate into an existing wireless network and stream Internet radio as well as music from the PC wirelessly to any room in the house.

More than 110 million Nokia mobile phone users can now set up their own Ovi email account directly on their phones

Espoo, Finland - Mail on Ovi, the free email account from Nokia, is now ‘live’ and can be set up directly on Nokia phones without requiring a PC to get started. People who use Nokia Series 40 devices can create their own email address directly on their mobile phones. The Ovi email account gives a person all the features and functionalities of a typical PC-based email account. During the Beta period, consumers will be able to choose from 12 languages based on the settings of their device, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hindi, Bengali, Tagalog, Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia.

“We’re creating a mindset shift with mobile messaging. Mail on Ovi is the first-ever email service which allows people to create an account directly on their mobile phone, and start using it right away” said Senior Vice President Tom Furlong, who oversees Consumer Messaging initiatives within Nokia’s Services & Software organization. “Rather than focusing purely on push email for the world’s most advanced mobile users, we are mobilizing email across Nokia’s mainstream device portfolio, while giving consumers in emerging markets their first email account, Mail on Ovi, as well as their very own internet identity. These people are the new ‘mobile digital natives’ who will exclusively use their mobile phones for email and internet, rather than a PC.”

Mobile phone users from India, Malaysia and the Philippines have been able to use the Beta service since November, with extremely encouraging results, and the availablity is now being extended to the rest of the world.*

Nokia has launched more than 35 Nokia Series 40 device models which immediately enable the creation of the Mail on Ovi email account**. As of October 2008, Nokia has shipped more than 110 million of such devices globally.

* Certain countries may not yet be supported during the Beta period

** Devices that enable Mail on Ovi include:
Nokia 1680 classic, Nokia 168Oi
Nokia 2320, Nokia 2323, Nokia 2330, Nokia 2600, Nokia 2600 classic, Nokia 2630, Nokia 2680 slide, Nokia 2760

High-end handset from Nokia meets wireless heart monitor from Polar

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced the Nokia N79 Active, which ships with the wireless Polar Bluetooth WearLink heart rate belt from Polar, the leading brand in sports instruments and heart rate monitoring.

This healthy addition to the Nokia Nseries range is the perfect running companion. A-GPS tracking and a new version of the popular Nokia Sports Tracker application - available simultaneously with first shipments of the device - spur you to record and publish your favorite routes and fitness data on the web. You can also share the tracks you listened to while working out, as well as upload and geotag route images taken with the Nokia N79 Active’s built-in 5 Megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics.

“The Nokia N79 Active is all about fun and fitness,” said Juha Kokkonen, Director, Nokia Nseries. “This handset keeps you entertained on those long workouts as you get in shape for next summer, while the Polar heart rate belt lets you know exactly how you’re doing. And with Sports Tracker you can add a new social dimension to your fitness program by building up and sharing a great record of all your workouts. This is an inspiring way to track your progress and to challenge yourself and fellow workout partners.”

“Polar is the number one choice for heart rate worldwide,” said Marco Suvilaakso, Executive Director, Polar, Sports Business Area. “Now with the Nokia N79 Active, the comfortable Polar Bluetooth WearLink heart rate belt takes the guess-work out of training. When you can objectively see how hard your body is working, you can enjoy working out with a whole new level of confidence.”

The Active version of the Nokia N79, the smallest Nokia Nseries device to date, ships with sporty headphones and an armband so you can keep yourself plugged in as you work out. A 4GB microSD memory card holds enough music even for those long endurance sessions. You can add new tracks to your playlists over the air from the Nokia Music Store or tune in to the radio with the handset’s FM transmitter.

The Nokia N79 Active will be available in select markets for an estimated retail price of EUR 375 before taxes and subsidies.

Nokia to add LGPL Open Source licensing option for the Qt UI and application framework

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced that its Qt cross-platform User Interface (UI) and application framework for desktop and embedded platforms will be available under the Lesser General Public License (LGPL) version 2.1 license from the release of Qt 4.5, scheduled for March 2009. Previously, Qt has been made available to the open source community under the General Public License (GPL) license. In addition, Qt will now be available from the new domain, www.qtsoftware.com.

The move to LGPL licensing will provide open source and commercial developers with more permissive licensing than GPL and so increase flexibility for developers. In addition, Qt source code repositories will be made publicly available and will encourage contributions from desktop and embedded developer communities. With these changes, developers will be able to actively drive the evolution of the Qt framework.

Qt 4.5 will also be available under commercial licensing terms, while licensing for previous versions of Qt remains unchanged. In addition, service offerings for Qt will be expanded to ensure that all Qt development projects can have access to the same levels of support, independent of the selected license.

“Broader use of Qt by even more leading companies will result in valuable feedback and increased contributions, ensuring that Qt remains the best-in-class, cross-platform UI and application framework. The accelerated development of Qt will allow developers, including Nokia, to deliver better devices and applications, reduce time to market and enable a wider deployment base for their solutions,” said Sebastian Nyström, Vice President, Qt Software, Nokia.

“Nokia is making significant contributions to open source communities through ongoing work with Qt, its contribution of Symbian OS and S60 to the Symbian Foundation and open development of the Maemo platform,” said Kai Öistämö, Executive Vice President, Devices, Nokia. “By moving to LGPL, opening Qt’s source code repositories and encouraging more contributions, Qt users will have more of a stake in the development of Qt, which will in turn encourage wider adoption. Nokia will be able to leverage improvements in Qt across S60 on Symbian OS, Maemo and OVI services without rewriting the source code.”

“Combining Nokia’s OS-independent Qt application framework with Freescale’s enablement software offers OEMs and applications developers a unique freedom of choice in selecting the most appropriate Freescale chipset while allowing the developer to develop and maintain a single code base of their application,” says Raja Tabet, Vice President of Solutions and Enablement Technology at Freescale. The LGPL model is an excellent and timely licensing option that will accelerate the adoption/deployment of the Freescale/Qt combined platform.”

“Qt is used extensively in Kubuntu and KDE applications, and Canonical is delighted to see this breakthrough in its licensing model,” said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of the Ubuntu project. “Qt’s new licensing terms will help us deliver ever more ‘lustful’ applications to users. Nokia’s continued investment in cross-platform Qt libraries, and the Linux platform, is a major driver of innovation in the free software desktop and mobile device stack.”

“We applaud Nokia’s move to simplify the licensing of Qt,” said Joe Miller, vice president, Platform & Technology Development, Linden Labs. “We find Qt to be intriguing and innovative technology regardless of licensing, but the new licensing has greatly simplified our decision to pursue QtWebkit for integration into Second Life.”

“Qt being available under the terms of the LGPL streamlines the licensing of applications built using KDE components on top of Qt-based applications,” said Sebastian Kügler, KDE e.V. Board Member. “This more permissive licensing will further lower the barrier for adoption of Qt and KDE technologies. The KDE team welcomes opening up the development process and is looking forward to further improved collaboration between KDE and Qt Software.”

About Qt
Qt is a cross-platform application framework. Using Qt, you can develop applications and user interfaces once, and deploy them across many desktop and embedded operating systems without rewriting the source code. Qt Software, formerly Trolltech, was acquired by Nokia in June 2008. For more details about Qt Software and its new licensing model, please visit www.qtsoftware.com

Join In! as Nokia showcases new devices, an array of compelling mobile services and how consumers can reduce their carbon footprint

Las Vegas, NV, USA - At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Nokia (NYSE: NOK) will showcase the industry’s broadest and most exciting mobile device portfolio including the coveted Nokia N97 mobile computer, the multiple award-winning Nokia E71 and new devices announced for North America. CES also marks the first public debut in North America of the highly anticipated Nokia N97 mobile computer which has been repeatedly commended as one of the most stylish, functional and impressive converged mobile devices to date.

Additional devices being announced at the show are the Nokia 1006, Nokia 7510 and Nokia E63 for North America. Nokia also invites attendees to Join In! the fun and exciting journey that we are embarking on in 2009 by visiting the Nokia booth to experience its growing consumer service offering which will continue to play a pivotal role in changing the way people communicate, play, share, search and consume content. Visit Nokia on the upper level of the Las Vegas Convention Center’s south hall, booth #30313.

“Nokia continues to connect more people around the world than any other mobile device manufacturer on the planet. More importantly, we continue to raise the bar with compelling mobile experiences,” said Mark Louison, President, North America, Nokia Inc. “This week at CES, Nokia is demonstrating our leadership by again setting the industry benchmark - with a wide range of devices that are easy-to-use, with fun and collaborative services that consumers demand, like music, gaming, maps and media. It’s an exciting time in our industry and we look forward to bringing more of these experiences to life in North America this year.”

Join In! the Expanding Nokia Community
The Nokia 7510 is the latest addition to the growing portfolio of devices available from T-Mobile USA. Building on the successful XpressMusic range of devices sold at T-Mobile, the Nokia 7510 gives consumers an added level of customization, style and function. This colorful device allows consumers to personalize their device with an external display that stays ‘hidden-until-lit’. The display utilizes LED lights to illuminate a new message, incoming call or while playing music, an artist and song title. This new flip phone is built on the Series 40 platform, acclaimed for superior ease of use, and comes with a push-to-open side key, enabling it to be opened with the press of a button as well as several colorful Xpress-On Covers to help consumers accessorize their device with their lives.

Further cementing Nokia’s commitment to the North American CDMA market, Nokia also introduced the Nokia 1006 - the latest CDMA device for AWS carriers, developed in Nokia’s San Diego product creation center. Ergonomically designed for on-the-go convenience, the Nokia 1006 is curved to comfortably fit a user’s face and hand, with a large, bright color display, and includes features like voice memo, speakerphone and a phonebook capable of holding 500 entries. The sleek device will be available in blue and silver.

Building on the extensive portfolio of devices in North America, Nokia is introducing the Nokia E63 at CES 2009. The North American variant of the Nokia E63 will be optimized for the US market; designed for people who need to manage their business and personal lives equally well. Building on the success of the Nokia E71, the company’s flagship messaging device, the Nokia E63 brings the QWERTY keyboard form factor to a broader audience at a great price. Engaging with your social networks is a breeze with the Nokia E63 - thanks to a large, bright 2.6 inch QVGA screen for web browsing and full QWERTY keyboard for easy updating and typing. The Nokia E63 is expected to begin shipping in North America in the first quarter of 2009.

To complement some of our newest mobile devices, Nokia is also introducing the Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-904. The Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-904 is capable of separating a user’s voice from ambient noise, ensuring good speech quality in noisy environments such as in the car, on public transportation or in busy public places such as restaurants. It has the ability to maintain two active connections between the headset and another device at the same time. So a user can simultaneously connect for example to a PC (for VOIP) and to a compatible mobile device. The Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-904 also offers up to five hours of talk time after only 15 minutes of charging. Additional information about the new Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-904 can be found at www.nokia.com/bh-904.

Join In! the Collaboration
Ever wanted to play your mobile music on your home stereo, or control your music devices with your mobile, maybe synchronize your digital content between your home devices and your phone? At CES 2009, Nokia will be demonstrating how consumers can make use of this ultimate home experience supported by the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) protocol. Additional information about this exciting demonstration can be found at http://europe.nokia.com/A41123203.

Another key offering that will be demonstrated at CES will include an innovation from the Nokia Research Center, in which Nokia will demonstrate EasyMeet, a public trial of its mobile communication and collaboration system making anywhere and anytime web conferencing a reality. EasyMeet users can use their mobile device to attend or invite others to online meetings where remotely created and stored documents can be shared and viewed via the mobile device. CES attendees are invited to go to http://easymeet.nokia.com from their mobile device to experience an EasyMeet demonstration.

The Power of “We”
Nokia has long been a recognized leader in driving responsible environmental practices, and at CES 2009, the company is announcing its role as worldwide sponsor of Giant Screen Films’ newest IMAX® production, Wild Ocean - a spectacular underwater adventure that showcases the power of people coming together to protect the environment that sustains them.

The film, directed and written by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, the Academy Award-nominated creators of the stage sensation STOMP!, chronicles a massive annual migration, following billions of sardines up South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal shoreline. CES attendees are invited to stop by the Nokia booth for tickets to experience this magical underwater adventure for a viewing on Friday, January 9 at 7 p.m. PST and 8 p.m. PST. Tickets and show-time information can be found at www.nokiausa.com/wildocean.

“Nokia continues to be at the forefront of driving ‘green thinking’ and helping consumers make environmentally intelligent choices. We strive to educate consumers on options for recycling their old mobile phones, and at CES 2009 we will demonstrate the new Nokia Carbon Calculator - a mobile application that encourages users of devices, such as the new Nokia 6650 with AT&T, to offset the carbon footprint of their travels,” said David Conrad, head of Environment, Nokia North America. “In addition to our green initiatives, education is also playing an important role, and our sponsorship of the film Wild Ocean is just another way in which we hope to educate the world that if we each do our part, we as a community can make a difference, making the planet a cleaner, greener and better place to live.”
