Mobile phones slows traffic

While it’s getting illegal to use mobile phone — or almost any other portable device for that matter — while driving in many countries/states, some people keep doing so. However, today I don’t want to talk about safety issues, rather I’ll focus on the traffic.

Mobile phones slows trafficApparently — and I guess obviously — people who drive and use their mobile phones are slowing down the traffic. According to The The Chicago Tribune, motorists who talk on mobile phones drive slower on the freeway, pass sluggish vehicles less often and take longer to complete their trips.

And while I don’t understand why would someone care how much time an individual needs to complete his/her trip, it’s somewhat an interesting perspective to read how mobile phones not only make driving dangerous but cause delays…

Egyptian woman asks court whether her husband can get a divorce via SMS

Now we really know mobile technology is entering every possible sphere of our lives. Apparently, a woman in Egypt is seeking clarification from a court on whether her husband’s declaration of divorce by text message is legally valid.

guy using a phoneAfter missing a call from her husband on her mobile phone, Iqbal Abul Nasr received an SMS from him saying “I divorce you because you didn’t answer your husband.”

If an Egyptian court declares the couple divorced, it would be the first reported case of divorce by SMS in the country. And while we’re on the subject, divorce by SMS has been highly debated across the Muslim world and some Islamic countries like Malaysia have banned the practice…

Finally, even though we consider ourselves to be quite tech savvy, we are totally against this — some things should be reserved for face-to-face meetings.

Smss to Surpass 2 Trillion Messages in Major Markets in 2008

As the popularity of SMSs continue to grow, Gartner forecasts 2.3 trillion messages will be sent across major markets worldwide in 2008, a 19.6 percent increase from the 2007 total of 1.9 trillion messages. Mobile messaging revenue across major markets will grow 15.7 percent in 2008 to $60.2 billion, up from $52 billion in 2007.

Although mobile messaging traffic volumes will continue to show strong growth in many markets, operator margins on messaging services have become progressively thinner as a result of competition and market saturation. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for SMS revenue in major markets worldwide from 2002-2006 was 29.8 percent. From 2007-2011, the CAGR for SMS revenue is forecast to be 9.9 percent.

“In many markets, there has been strong pressure on operator margins for text messaging services and this has been driven by often intense competition between carriers,” said Nick Ingelbrecht, research director for Gartner. “At the same time, consumers have grown accustomed to large or unlimited bundles of inclusive SMS as part of their basic cellular service package. Carriers should plan for a future of much reduced margins on messaging services. They should develop messaging platforms, services portfolios and pricing plans that support the broader objectives of customer acquisition and retention, rather than short-term margin enhancements.”

Asia/Pacific and Japan are the biggest consumers of mobile messaging. Gartner estimated that there were 1.5 trillion messages sent in 2007, and the number will grow to 1.7 trillion in 2008. Volumes of short messages and picture messages will increase, but growth rates are expected to slow in line with the saturation of mobile connections. Volumes of photo messaging will start to stall in the next few years as users increasingly share photos through mobile communities and social network portals rather than sending them directly to one another.

SMS Traffic at New Year Forecasted to Shatter Previous Record Levels

Airwide Solutions has published its forecast for this year’s New Year mobile messaging peak. The short message service (SMS) celebrated its heritage and strong performance, turning fifteen this year, and is forecast to continue its consistent growth and annual celebratory peak.

This year Airwide anticipates the USA to lead the western world with nearly 730 million messages expected to be sent to bring in the new year. The UK also continues to be a leader in the west with 280 million messages expected to be sent, equivalent to 4.6 texts per capita. Yet it is Asia that should witness the largest volumes. Despite the main celebration in China being during Chinese New Year later in the year, Airwide still expects SMS volumes for the 31st December to 1st January celebrations to beat the rest of the world. A typical day in China sees 1.6 billion texts sent, outdoing the previous leaders the Philippines .

Switzerland is the most prolific at texting their friends and families as the clock strikes midnight, sending nearly seven times as many messages at New Year than on an average day, with over 75 million SMS predicted to be sent. This is closely followed by Greeks, who send just under five times as many messages as a typical day, this year expecting to see 35 million messages at New Year.

On a more modest level, but still topping previous growth, Telenor in Norway can expect to see 33.4 million SMS New Year messages. Similarly, Czech Republic could send 3.3 times as many mobile messages to greet the New Year as they do on a typical day, with over 55 million expected.

Belgium is forecast to double its 2004 New Year figure to 46.7 million messages.

The French, on the other hand, seem to prefer the traditional face-to-face greetings at New Year, as they send no more mobile messages at New Year than any other typical day, currently around 51 million messages.

“Airwide was involved in the sending of the first ever SMS message, fifteen years ago this December. Back then no-one anticipated it to become so prolific. Mobile messaging, led by SMS, still continues to grow and is now complimented by multimedia mobile messaging, mobile marketing, location based services and now mobile instant messaging,” says Jay Seaton, CMO of Airwide Solutions. “New Year is usually the biggest peak in messaging every year and this year will be no exception.”

Teens and young adults send more SMS than any other demographics

Teens and young adults send more SMS than any other demographicsIt’s kinda obvious that teens and young adults are texting more than any other demographic. We just didn’t knew how much more they do that…

According to Ypulse, people ages 13-24 send more than 50 messages per week. In contrast, half of all survey respondents use text messaging at least once a week. Furthermore, Ypulse’s findings indicate that 54% of the mentioned demographic use SMS for social networking, while 44% of them use it for flirting or dating. Finally, 10% of 13-34 year olds said they have broken up with a boy or girl friend using text messaging. Now, that’s nasty…

Mobile phones to become London’s common currency

underground_main.jpg London shoppers will soon be able to leave their cash at home and use their mobile phones to get on the bus and tube, pay for coffee and put big-ticket items on credit. The mobiles will contain the same security as chip and Pin cards, combined with the contactless communication system used in Transport for London’s Oyster travel card. The Sunday Observer reports.

“Early next year Barclaycard will run a trial of the technology on the back of its new ‘OnePulse’ contactless card, which was launched in September. OnePulse cards are combined credit cards and Oyster cards, and also allow small purchases (under £10) to be made without entering a Pin.

About 1,000 retailers in the capital are already equipped with the contactless terminals for OnePulse, so putting the technology into mobile phones will not require them to install yet more expensive kit. Several hundred Barclaycard customers will be issued with compatible phones supplied by Nokia, which has been pushing the technology for several years.

… The phone will also record every transaction, so fraudulent use will be immediately apparent. If the phone is lost or stolen, it can be immobilised remotely. Visa will also offer to alert cardholders by text if one of their cards is being used in a suspicious way. Contactless payments by mobile phone could also allay fears that criminals could clone cards by using portable readers and standing next to card users.”

cre8txt keyboard translates SMS slang to English

Granted, it seems that we’ll all be using SMS slang to condense our resumés in the not-too-distant future, but on the off chance that unadulterated English is still required in some facet of your life, the cre8txt keyboard will make things an awful lot easier. This gem plugs into one’s PC via USB and actually translates texting jargon into words that Merriam-Webster would approve of, and in case that wasn’t gimmicky enough, it also includes predictive text software to complete sentences before you can even think up your own endings. We still can’t see such a device being worth the £49.99 ($105) asking price, but we’re betting that our kids will view things differently. Oh, the humanity.

Brits Send One Billion SMS Messages Each Week

That’s a lot of LOLs and OMGs. It turns out that British people are sending more text messages than ever and the trend is still on the rise. The one billion SMS messages that British people send every week (on average) represents a 25% increase over the same period just last year. To make things even scarier, it took the people of England the entire year of 1999 to send one billion messages. Now they do it in just a week.

The BBC has offered all sorts of reasons why people have suddenly become so addicted to text messaging. For example, they cite factors like convenience, ease of use, and ubiquity, but by far the biggest factor has got to be price. It works out to be cheaper for most users to send a text message than to say the same thing over a voice call, thanks to the “incredibly high voice tariffs that most European wireless customers are forced to pay.”

Have you been using SMS message in lieu of actual conversations? With the growing proliferation of text messages, instant messengers, and other similar services, will we soon be doing all of our communication through digital text?

Chinese get the message on texting

Texting
Far more than Americans, they prefer faster methods of communicating rather than e-mail.

BEIJING — Real estate agent Xu Jianzhong is wired — but in a way that few in the e-mail addicted, BlackBerry-packing West would understand.

The 20-year-old from China’s rural Henan province doesn’t own a computer. He visits the local Internet cafe to check his e-mail every couple of weeks.

That’s not to say Xu is out of touch. He just prefers tapping out text messages to his friends on his Lenovo cellphone — the most expensive piece of electronics gear he owns — over typing an e-mail on a computer keyboard.”When I communicate with my friends, I use short messages,” Xu said. “I send messages in mornings and afternoons, asking, ‘Do you want to come out to eat?’ ”

E-mail has become the new snail mail for many Chinese as they turn to the immediacy of text messages on cellphones and instant messages on personal computers. The most affluent and educated use e-mail, but by and large people here rely much more heavily on the shorter, faster and more conversational methods of electronic communication.

E-mail here is treated with the same disdain as the telephone answering machine, said Guo Liang, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing.

“You won’t have a direct response; you have to wait,” he said.

China’s mania for messaging — particularly mobile messaging — is largely a product of how technology developed here. Like other emerging global markets, rural regions of China lacked phones or even a television as recently as two decades ago. The country modernized just as mobile technology was broadly accessible throughout the world.

China is now the world’s largest mobile phone market.
