LG to make a watch phone?

LG to make a watch phone?

Engadget got a chance to take few photos of what seems as LG-made watch phone. And while we still don’t dig the idea of wearing a phone around a wrist, I guess the Korean giant did some research and figured there’s a room on the market for such devices. Apparently, the phone/watch has some cool interface and relies on exclusively on the three buttons located at the bottom of the device. The bad news — at least for the watch phone lovers — is that it appears to be a mere prototype at the moment, but who knows - we may see it hitting the store shelves within few months. In the meantime, check out the short video demoing device after the jump.

Limited Edition Apple iPhone Wrapped in Platinum

The Apple iPhone is easily one of the hottest electronic gadgets of the year, getting everyone excited about touchscreen displays and the marrying of music with voice conversations. It’s not exactly an exclusive device, however, because just about anyone can waltz into an AT&T dealer and ask for a touchtastic mobile. If you want to be a little more special, you may want to consider getting a Platinum Edition Apple iPhone. This is because only 250 units will be produced.

To be sold through GoldStriker, the Platinum iPhone comes at quite a premium over its non-platinum counterpart. Whereas a regular iPhone goes for about $400, the platinum version is ringing up at a cool £1099.95. That works out to about US$2,230, meaning that you can have one of these or five of the garden variety phones.

Looking for special features? Keep looking, because the Platinum iPhone still boasts the exact same spec sheet. Then again, with a production run of just 250 units, you can feel pretty darn special showing off that Platinum iPhone… until someone steals it and posts it up on eBay.

Disney cellular to land on Japanese shores

Entertainment monolith Disney will soon launch new cellular products in Japan, the company has announced. Beginning in early 2008, the company will partner with local carrier Softbank, and begin producing unspecified content, as well as new Disney-branded cellphones. Softbank is currently the third-largest network operator in Japan; Reuters writes that it will most likely be the main beneficiary of the deal, since it is a new carrier and fighting giants NTT DoCoMo and KDDI.For Disney, the move may be more suspect; an IDC Japan analyst argues that Softbank may gain no more than 100,000 to 200,000 customers out of a possible 100 million, and Disney recently announced the closure of Disney Mobile, its American MVNO. DM’s death will mark at least the second failure of a major Disney cellular project, since the company had to close Mobile ESPN in 2006.

Sony Ericsson K850 modded to look extremely cool!

Sony Ericsson K850 modded to look extremly cool!

First of all I think the original Sony Ericsson K850i looks cool enough. But not for all people apparently, as we’ve just spotted the modded version which has some tattoo-like painting on the back. I’m not sure you can change the cover of the K850i, hence I don’t how the person behind this device managed to do this. Maybe it’s a paint job? Guess we’ll never know — but the fact stays it looks very cool… Now that I’m thinking, I can easily envision these kind of customized handsets selling like cupcakes being offered free of charge to the world’s celebrities…

It’s A Pen. It’s a Phone. Wait, It’s Both!

The name pretty much says it all, doesn’t it. What you see here is a device that is appropriately dubbed the PenPhone. I’m pretty sure you can figure out where the convergence side of things fits into this remarkably compact device. Unlike other multi-function spy pens, however, the PenPhone doesn’t do all that great a job at hiding its secondary function.

Sure, you can still scribble notes like how you would with your BIC or Parker pen, but the PenPhone can also be used as a phone. The digits are lined up along the barrel, but I have a feeling that they’re not exactly buttons. Instead, there is a control wheel at the top of pen for navigating your way through the tiny LCD screen. I’m guessing that when you need to dial, you spin that wheel to get to your number and then push it in to select it.

There’s also a microSD slot for whatever reason, but a SIM card slot is noticeably missing. In this way, you’ve got to wonder how the phone function works at all. They say that it’s not “just a concept” and that there is a working prototype kicking around some place. The downside is that no one has seen this mythical working unit.

Audi A1 Concept Comes with AudiPhone Too

Wow, all of these touchscreen phones are just spilling out of the woodwork. Even Audi is getting in on the action with a cell phone of their own. Yup, you guess it: the AudiPhone lacks a keypad, opting instead for a touch-based user interface.

The device, which almost looks like a Nokia mobile phone if I didn’t know any better, will primarily serve as a cell phone. That said, it also boasts enough functionality to cover your MP3 player and GPS navigating needs. Still sounds like standard fare for a mobile phone, right? Well, because it’s meant to accompany your car, it’s also a remote car starter, car finder, and remote display for the cameras integrated into the car.

Not much else is known about the AudiPhone, but it sure sounds like an interesting gadget to bundle in with the Audi A1.

Samsung goes for gold with AnyCall E848

Samsung releases Samsung AnyCall E848 18k Gold Edition for 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing

What better way to celebrate the coming of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing than to release a special edition of the Samsung AnyCall E848? Samsung’s new AnyCall E848 18k Gold Edition is clad in the same precious metal that Olympic athletes will be vying for in Beijing China next year.

With a 2.2 inch QVGA display, 70MB of onboard storage for media playback, A2DP Bluetooth 2.0, microSD card slot, and 5-hour talk time, this slick slider isn’t a slouch in the features department. And, with 18k gold covering almost every square inch of the exterior of this Samsung AnyCall E848, this thing’s got some serious “bling.” Here’s an idea. Use the Samsung E848 18k Gold Edition as a consolation prize to those Olympic athletes that shot for gold…and missed. The quad-band GSM radio should ensure that athletes from around the globe will be able to use this gold-plated beauty in their home country.

Expect to shell out about HK$2,780 ($359) for this gold-clad slider when it drops. We’re not sure when it’s coming, but we’re betting that it’ll hit the market before the torch-lighting ceremony in 2008.

Keep reading for some additional shots of the Samsung AnyCall E848 18k Gold Edition.

The Beyonce Phone gets real - Sprint’s Beyonce-themed Samsung UpStage

Beyonce Phone BWe’re not sure why, but Sprint has made the Beyonce Phone a reality. The B’Phone is essentially a Burgundy-colored, gold-accented Samsung UpStage that comes with Beyonce-themed goodies and packaging that looks like a CD case. Now, don’t get this confused with a product launch. The Samsung UpStage has been on market for quite some time now. Beyonce’s involvement with the UpStage isn’t new either - she was the original spokeswoman for the dual-faced musicphone. So, what is new? Well, the coloring and the questionably appealing Beyonce content. We’re almost speechless - and not in the good way.If, for some crazy reason, you actually want one of these horribly tacky phones, you’ll have to wait until November 4. Wal-Mart (seriously) will be carrying these interesting (to put it kindly) musicphones. When is a special edition phone actually less appealing than the original? When you ask Beyonce to bring a touch of “bootylicious” style to your musicphone, that’s when.

LG shows off Rolex concept phone

Rolex Phone concept from LGWith all the recent fashion phones from the likes of Prada, Armani, and Levis, it makes sense for mobile phone manufacturers to partner up with high-end watchmakers on luxurious handsets. LG seems to be thinking just that. The South Korean mobile phone manufacturer recently showed off their Rolex mobile phone concept to Tech Digest.

Unfortunately, LG did not allow photos to be taken inside the demonstration room, but Tech Digest tells us that the Rolex concept phone is quite the looker. With a Rolex watch face embedded into the casing, the “luxurious leathery exterior” looked to be a high-end phone after a Rolex fan’s heart. It’s not clear if LG is actively working with Rolex to produce a high-end fashion phone, but given the fit and finish of the concept model, and LG Rolex Phone may just be in the cards.

If the Rolex Phone commands the same tens-of-thousands of dollars price tag, it will most definitely be relegated to the likes of true Rolex aficionados. We sure won’t be sporting anything with “Rolex” branding anytime soon - not even a phone.
